Wed, 02 May 2012 11:30:16 -0700 Secondhand smoke continues to vex children with asthma - Health.am http://apirmepot.posterous.com/secondhand-smoke-continues-to-vex-children-wi http://apirmepot.posterous.com/secondhand-smoke-continues-to-vex-children-wi ? Asthma ? ? Tobacco & Marijuana ? Apr 30, 2012

Despite longstanding recommendations for children with asthma to avoid tobacco smoke, many youths are still exposed to secondhand smoke and their health suffers because of it, according to a study to be presented Tuesday, May 1, at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Boston.

?National asthma guidelines have advised avoidance of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) for patients with asthma for decades, but it is unclear to what degree these recommendations are being followed and what the impact of exposure has been in an era of increased awareness of the effects of ETS exposure,? said lead author Lara J. Akinbami, MD, FAAP, medical officer, National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers undertook this investigation after co-author Brian Kit, MD, MPH, conducted a study showing that 53 percent of children with asthma were exposed to smoke from cigarettes, cigars or pipes from 2005 to 2010. These findings also will be presented at the PAS meeting on Saturday, April 28.

Investigators analyzed data from the 2003-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for 972 children ages 6-19 years who had been diagnosed by a doctor with asthma and who reported having asthma at the time of the survey. They looked at the association between exposure to ETS and the following effects of wheezing in the past year:

number of days of school or work missed;
number of health care visits to a doctor?s office or emergency department (ED);
number of days with sleep disturbed;
amount of activity limitation; and
any wheezing with exercise or physical activity.

NHANES consists of health interviews and examinations at a mobile center. During the health interviews, respondents were asked about demographic characteristics, smoking in the household, personal smoking habits (ages 12 and above) and asthma history. Blood samples were taken to assess serum cotinine, which measures exposure to ETS or personal use of tobacco products.

Results showed that 53 percent of the children were exposed to ETS. After adjusting for differences in age, sex, race and poverty status, exposure to ETS was associated with higher odds of having three or more visits (vs. no visits) to a physician?s office or ED due to wheezing in the past year; sleep disturbed by wheezing one or more nights per week (vs. none); and activity limitations (fair amount, moderate amount or a lot vs. none) due to wheezing.

There was no significant association between ETS exposure and missing school or work due to wheezing or wheezing during exercise.

?Although this advice is certainly not new, discussing avoidance of environmental tobacco smoke with asthma patients remains critical,? Dr. Akinbami said. ?New tools are needed to help families achieve the goal of reducing exposure, both inside the home and in other environments.?

The Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) are four individual pediatric organizations that co-sponsor the PAS Annual Meeting ? the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, the Academic Pediatric Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Members of these organizations are pediatricians and other health care providers who are practicing in the research, academic and clinical arenas. The four sponsoring organizations are leaders in the advancement of pediatric research and child advocacy within pediatrics, and all share a common mission of fostering the health and well-being of children worldwide.

Wed, 02 May 2012 05:52:39 -0700 Investing in Google Stock | Stock Trend Investing Guide http://apirmepot.posterous.com/investing-in-google-stock-stock-trend-investi http://apirmepot.posterous.com/investing-in-google-stock-stock-trend-investi

Investing in Google stock. Google is listed on NASDAQ.

?

Google has been a hot stock for the last few years, and if you?re thinking about getting started investing, you may be considering investing in Google stock. I mean, why not? If you could double or triple your investment, who wouldn?t?

Well, you should carefully consider your investment in Google stock, or any stock, based on these following things.

?

How Does Google Earn Revenue?

?

When considering investing in any company, including Google, you should look at how they make their money, and how they plan to continue to do so in the future.

For Google, they make their money mostly through advertising and minimally through other services. And going forward, they don?t plan to change this strategy too much. They make their money displaying advertisements in search results, and are going to continue to do that.

They are also trying to expand into other advertising arenas, such as mobile, but plain old search makes up the most of the earnings.

?

What is The Company?s Advantage?

?

You should also look at what advantage a company has over its competition when investing. You don?t want to invest in a company that is struggling to keep up with its competition.

In Google?s case, it is dominating its competition in search, and that is the main competitive advantage is has. Advertisers want to use Google because more consumers use Google search than any other company. Will that change in the future? Maybe, but unlikely.

The company also has an advantage in hiring talent to keep it competitive going forward. Knowledge and talent, especially in technology companies, are key to future success. The companies that can continue to invent are the ones that survive.

?

What is The Stock Price?

?

Finally, when investing, you want to look at a company?s price, especially compared to its earnings. This tells you how expensive a company is to invest in, because you will pay a multiple of the amount it earns.

In Google?s case, it is currently priced at about 18x earnings. This means that you will pay $18 for every dollar the company earns. The goal is that earnings continue to grow, and so you won?t really have to wait so long to be recouped.

Google is expensive, but not compared to other technology companies. As such, it could be a good investment going forward.

If you really want to invest in Google stock, please study the Google Investors Relations information.

?

However, personally I do not think that I have more knowledge about Google than the rest of the market to make a decision if I should buy this particular stock. Note that I do invest in Google. Google is one of the S&P 500 stocks. By investing in an S&P 500 index fund, I also invest in Google stock? together with hundreds of others stocks. In this way I have diversified my investment.

?

Do you know more than the market about Google or another stock, or do you also invest in Index Funds? Please comment below. Get in any case our free stock investing email newsletter to learn more about index investing.

Wed, 02 May 2012 04:23:17 -0700 Italian merchants funded England's discovery of North America http://apirmepot.posterous.com/italian-merchants-funded-englands-discovery-o http://apirmepot.posterous.com/italian-merchants-funded-englands-discovery-o Monday, April 30, 2012

Evidence that a Florentine merchant house financed the earliest English voyages to North America, has been published on-line in the academic journal Historical Research.

The article by Dr Francesco Guidi-Bruscoli, a member of a project based at the University of Bristol, indicates that the Venetian merchant John Cabot (alias Zuan Caboto) received funding in April 1496 from the Bardi banking house in London.

The payment of 50 nobles (?16 13s. 4d.) was made so that 'Giovanni Chabotte' of Venice, as he is styled in the document, could undertake expeditions 'to go and find the new land'.

With a royal patent from Henry VII of England, Cabot went on to lead expeditions from Bristol during the summers of 1496 and 1497. The second of these was to result in the European discovery of North America ? Christopher Columbus not having ventured beyond the Caribbean islands.

Dr Evan Jones, who leads the project in Bristol, describes the new evidence as a "fantastic find". He adds, "We have long known that Italy's great merchant banks were key to the success of the ventures launched by Portugal and Spain. But it always seemed that the English ventures were an exception. Now it is clear that they too were part of network of Italian-financed expeditions to explore beyond the limits of the known world."

Dr Guidi-Bruscoli, who is based at the University of Florence and is also a Fellow at Queen Mary in London, found the financial records after being contacted by Jones and his co-researcher, Margaret Condon. For several years they have been attempting to relocate the research findings of a deceased historian, Dr Alwyn Ruddock. She had made some extraordinary finds about Cabot's voyages, but had all her notes destroyed following her death in 2005.

One of Ruddock's claims was that Cabot was financed by an Italian bank. She had, however, refused to reveal the source of her information. Following an invitation to visit the deceased historian's house in 2010, Jones and Condon discovered the source ? in the form of a sticky label on an old shoe cupboard: 'The Bardi firm of London'. They then contacted Dr Guidi-Bruscoli in Florence, who was able to locate the archive, the financial ledger and the entry concerned.

Finding out about the funding of Cabot's voyages is exciting because, while it has long been known that the explorer received political support from the King, the identity and motivations of those who paid for the expeditions has never been known.

The entry itself is also curious in that the reference to "the new land" implies that the money was given so that Cabot could find a land that was already known about. As such, it may revive claims that Bristol merchants had discovered North America at an earlier time. Dr Guidi-Bruscoli is more cautious on this score, however. "While the entry implies that the Bardi believed in a prior discovery, we can't assume this had occurred. It is likely the Bardi were referring to the mythical 'Island of Brasil', which Bristol mariners certainly claimed had been found by one of their number in times past. Whether this story can be equated with an actual discovery is much more uncertain, however."

Dr Jones agrees. "It would be wonderful to find that Bristol mariners had first visited North America before the 1480s ? if only because it would cast new light on the originality of Columbus' venture of 1492. Right now, however, we can't be sure about that. Although one never knows, that could change."

Tue, 01 May 2012 21:48:47 -0700 Judge: Golden Globes broadcast deal with NBC valid http://apirmepot.posterous.com/judge-golden-globes-broadcast-deal-with-nbc-v http://apirmepot.posterous.com/judge-golden-globes-broadcast-deal-with-nbc-v

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A federal judge ruled Monday that producers of the Golden Globe Awards acted properly when they negotiated a deal keeping the glitzy gala on NBC through 2018.

U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz's 89-page ruling states that the production company, dick clark productions, has a right to negotiate the deal and work on the show as long as it airs on NBC. That right was a key part of a long-running dispute between the company, known as dcp, and the Globes' organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The association sued over the broadcast deal in November 2010, but the two sides have worked together on the past two awards shows. The production company has claimed it has a perpetual right to work on the show as long as it airs on NBC, but the association argued that it never agreed to those terms and it was facing the loss of its creation.

The Globes have become big business, with Hollywood A-listers appearing each year. The journalists' group and producer split the multimillion-dollar annual profits evenly.

There was no immediate comment from the HFPA. Matz has said he doesn't expect his ruling will end the dispute, but that it will likely lead to an appeal.

Matz's ruling states the dcp only has a right to work with NBC, but that it does not need to receive approval for its broadcast deal directly from the HFPA anymore because of a 1993 amendment to their working relationship.

"We are pleased the court affirmed our contract and look forward to working with the HFPA and NBC to nurture and expand the Golden Globes franchise for years to come," dcp wrote in a statement.

The judge stated the unusual agreement came about largely because of HFPA's own leadership problems. "HFPA suffered from the absence of sound, business-like practices," Matz wrote.

He noted the group's complicated internal politics and frequent elections, some of which "triggered bitter feelings."

"HFPA members have always been dedicated to the success of the Golden Globes Award Show," Matz wrote. "But often they succumbed to bouts of pronounced turmoil and personal feuds."

The judge's ruling came after he heard nine days of testimony earlier this year over the deal negotiated by dcp. Dick Clark sold the company in 2007, but the dispute focused heavily on events that took place while he still owned it in 1993.

The judge had to determine whether a 1993 agreement between the HFPA and dcp gave the production company the right to work on the show perpetually, provided it airs on NBC. The association contended it never agreed to the perpetuity clause, and that if it were upheld it would the HFPA control over its signature property, the Globes.

Attorneys for dcp argued that the clause was to ensure continuity and protect the production company, which had just negotiated a multi-year deal to return the Globes to broadcast airwaves for the first time since a scandal knocked them from CBS in the early 1980s.

Matz noted the contrast between the production company and the journalists' group in his ruling.

"In contrast, dcp acted in a consistently business-like fashion, and for almost all of the 27 year relationship it had with HFPA before this suit was filed dcp was represented by one experienced executive who was adept at dealing fairly and effectively with the often amateurish conduct of HFPA," he wrote.

The disputed deal is worth $150 million, but the association contends the broadcast rights are worth much more now. The show, while not a reliable predictor of Oscar night glory, attracts the top stars from both television and film and attracts millions of viewers each year. The booze-filled gala is more unpredictable and less staid than other major reality shows, which has only been amplified by host Ricky Gervais in recent years.

Matz noted that the agreement between the HFPA and dcp ? and his ruling ? tie the two groups together as long as the show remains on NBC. If the network drops the show, the production company's rights to work on the gala would also end.

Wind turbines interact with atmospheric boundary layer near the surface

Large wind farms in certain areas in the United States appear to affect local land surface temperatures, according to a paper published today in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The study, led by Liming Zhou, an atmospheric scientist at the State University of New York- (SUNY) Albany, provides insights about the possible effects of wind farms.

The results could be important for developing efficient adaptation and management strategies to ensure long-term sustainability of wind power.

"This study indicates that land surface temperatures have warmed in the vicinity of large wind farms in west-central Texas, especially at night," says Anjuli Bamzai, program director in the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, which funded the research.

"The observations and analyses are for a relatively short period, but raise important issues that deserve attention as we move toward an era of rapid growth in wind farms in our quest for alternate energy sources."

Considerable research has linked the carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels with rising global temperatures.

Consequently, many nations are moving toward cleaner sources of renewable energy such as wind turbines. Generating wind power creates no emissions, uses no water and is likely "green."

"We need to better understand the system with observations, and better describe and model the complex processes involved, to predict how wind farms may affect future weather and climate," said Zhou.

There have been a growing number of studies of wind farm effects on weather and climate, primarily using numerical models due to the lack of observations over wind farms.

As numerical models are computationally intensive and have uncertainties in simulating regional and local weather and climate, said Zhou, remote sensing is likely the most efficient and effective way to study wind farm effects over larger spatial and longer temporal scales.

To understand the potential impact of wind farms on local weather and climate, Zhou's team analyzed satellite-derived land surface temperatures from regions around large wind farms in Texas for the period 2003-2011.

The researchers found a night-time warming effect over wind farms of up to 0.72 degrees Celsius per decade over the nine-year-period in which data were collected.

Because the spatial pattern of warming mirrors the geographic distribution of wind turbines, the scientists attribute the warming primarily to wind farms.

The year-to-year land surface temperature over wind farms shows a persistent upward trend from 2003 to 2011, consistent with the increasing number of operational wind turbines with time.

"This warming effect is most likely caused by the turbulence in turbine wakes acting like fans to pull down warmer near-surface air from higher altitudes at night," said Somnath Baidya Roy of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a co-author of the paper.

While the warming effect reported is local and small compared to the strong background year-to-year land surface temperature variation, the authors believe that this work draws attention to an important scientific issue that requires further investigation.

"The estimated warming trends only apply to the study region and to the study period, and thus should not be interpolated into other regions, globally or over longer periods," Zhou said. "For a given wind farm, once there are no new wind turbines added, the warming effect may reach a stable level."

The study represents a first step in exploring the potential of using satellite data to quantify the possible effects of the development of big wind farms on weather and climate, said Chris Thorncroft of SUNY-Albany, a co-author of the paper.

"We're expanding this approach to other wind farms," said Thorncroft, "and building models to understand the physical processes and mechanisms driving the interactions of wind turbines and the atmosphere boundary layer near the surface."

Other authors of the paper include Lance Bosart at SUNY-Albany, Yuhong Tian of NOAA, and Yuanlong Hu at Terra-Gen Power LLC in San Diego, Calif.

Can you believe it's already movie awards season again? We're talking about the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, of course — one of our favorite times of the year.

The official nominees list is out and full of fun new additions in category, performance and movie form. As in the past three years, "Twilight" is nominated in two areas that the fan-favorite franchise has dominated: Best Kiss and Best Movie.

This week's Twilight Tuesday is all about analyzing what will go down live on the awards show Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, particularly with the history of "Twilight" and the Best Kiss category, which three-time winners Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will likely continue to rule with their "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" smooch.

Their competitors this year are actually pretty fierce: Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone ("Crazy, Stupid, Love."), Rupert Grint and Emma Watson ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"), Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson ("The Hunger Games"), and Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum ("The Vow").

Stiff competition or not, because Stewart and Pattinson have such a seriously dedicated fanbase and a great track record with both their Movie Awards appearances and award acceptances, we're betting the odds are in their favor. It all started back in 2009, when Stewart and Pattinson took home the golden popcorn for their first onscreen kiss as beloved characters Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. It was all about the art of the tease back then, as the two stars didn't actually kiss during their acceptance.

In 2010, they came back ready to play and treated fans to a wisp of a kiss after their win. Then, last year, Pattinson brought the house down when he stormed into the audience to plant a wet one on co-star Taylor Lautner.

We're not ones to count chickens before they hatch, but what might Stewart and Pattinson do this year if they win? Kiss other co-stars? Kiss each other and all of the Cullen family in attendance?

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Three people were killed and one person is missing after a yacht apparently crashed into a larger boat during a race off the coast of California and Mexico this past week, authorities said.

The accident occurred Friday night or early Saturday morning. The 37-foot sailboat, named the Aegean, had been taking part in a 125-mile race from Newport, California to Ensenada, Mexico, when it was reported missing early Saturday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the boat's image vanished from the online race tracking system, prompting a Coast Guard search which led to the discovery of the boat's wreckage near the Coronado Islands in Mexico, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing Association.

Three members of the crew were found dead aboard the sailboat.

None of the bodies have been identified, the Newport Ocean Sailing Association reported on its website.

US Coast Guard Petty Officer Henry Dunphy in San Diego said it's still not clear what happened.

"There will be an investigation to determine exactly what happened. We're just not sure at this point. We're going to be looking into it," Dunphy said.

The Coast Guard is searching for the missing crew member by boat and helicopter.

"Basically we're searching around Coronado Islands. Last night it was a 10 by 10 area, this morning it'll be expanding based on basically drift patterns would be in that area," said Dunphy.

"We had a coast guard cutter on scene all night, this morning we're going to be launching some more aerial searches with a helicopter and then we'll go from there," Dunphy added.

These would be the first fatalities in the 65-year history of the race, according to NOSA's website, but it is California's second ocean racing accident this month.

(AP) ? A lawsuit filed against the Recording Academy over its decision to trim the Grammy Award categories from 109 to 78 has been dismissed.

The motion last week by New York State Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Oing granted the Academy's motion to reject a lawsuit by Grammy-nominated jazz musician Bobby Sanabria and three others. Sanabria had been the loudest opponent of the Academy's decision last year to reduce its categories and fold some genres into larger fields.

In an interview Sunday, Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow said he was gratified by the court's decision.

"The decision makes it very clear in the eyes of our legal system that we, as we've said all along ... have done all of the changes that we've made through our process based on our own rules, regulations and bylaws," said Portnow.

"It seems to me that the court made it very clear that this (is) an issue for the Academy to resolve on a regular basis," he added.

The Academy announced last April that after a more than yearlong review, it had decided to trim its categories by 31, in part to make the awards more competitive. That meant eliminating categories by sex, so men and women compete in the same vocal categories.

But it also eliminated other niche categories and created broader ones. For example, instead of a best Latin jazz album, those musicians competed against a larger group of artists in the best jazz instrumental category.

In his lawsuit, Sanabria accused the Academy of not following the proper procedures to implement the changes, and demanded that the best Latin jazz category be reinstated, saying the removal had a detrimental effect on the musicians' careers by taking away the Latin jazz category specifically.

Sanabria on Sunday held out the possibility of an appeal, and said he was waiting to see the judge's official ruling.

"We have to step back from this because we've been so involved in this for so long," he said. "Sometimes you have to take a breather from some things."

He added: "It's disappointing but I expected this to be a long fight."

Sanabria was part of a vocal group that protested the cuts made by the Academy, drawing sympathizers that at one point included Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Sanabria called the cuts unfair, and even racist.

However, as the February awards drew closer, few key stars aligned themselves with Sanabria's cause.

Portnow said Sanabria represented a small number of the Academy's members and that most had no problem with the changes, which Portnow said made the awards more competitive.

"Frankly, the actual discontent and impact was very, very small when you compare (it) to the majority of the (membership)," he said. "You just didn't have a huge critical mass here."

The Academy's board of trustees is due to meet in May to consider last year's other changes and other matters involving the Grammys. However, Portnow said it is unlikely they will reverse the cuts made last year.

"This year, I think the review will be a little more micro than macro," he said. "Overall, I would anticipate that the overall structure would remain the same."

Sanabria was hopeful the board, which he said consists of new members sympathetic to his coalition's cause, might restore the categories. If not, Sanabria seemed prepared to continue the fight, which he said was for the good of the Academy.

"In families, there is always conflict," he said. "We love the Academy, and that's why we're fighting for this."

Tue, 01 May 2012 15:29:46 -0700 Global strikes threaten turbulence for travelers http://apirmepot.posterous.com/global-strikes-threaten-turbulence-for-travel http://apirmepot.posterous.com/global-strikes-threaten-turbulence-for-travel

By Sean O'Neill, Budget Travel

Talk of a May 1?"general strike" by the Occupy Wall Street movement has included some plans to disrupt travel, such as the goal of "blockading" one of the routes into Manhattan. What will actually happen on Tuesday is unclear, given that plans to blockade San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge were called off over the weekend.

The headlines about labor strikes in the US make for a good excuse to remind Americans who plan to head overseas this year about strikes elsewhere. In Europe, labor unions are protesting austerity cuts made by governments during the economic crisis. In the past month, days of strikes by French air traffic controllers and by workers for Spanish airline Iberia led to hundreds of flights being delayed and canceled.

But strikes aren't limited to Europe. Earlier this month at India's Delhi Airport, a strike by airbridge operators paralized operations.

Here are some highlights of threatened labor actions to come?and how to adjust your travel plans accordingly:

?

  • On May 3 in?Spain, workers at Madrid Airport plan to strike.
  • On May 4 in?Italy, baggage workers at Milan Airport may strike, and a strike on the intercity Trenitalia rail line is planned for May 12.
  • On May 10 in?the UK, a multi-sector strike will include members of the country's largest rail and transport union, with possible disruptions for travelers aiming to get around cities like London.
  • On May 7 through 13 in?Portugal, workers for capital city Lisbon's transport system are calling for a rolling strikes. Later in the month, a general strike is being called for nationwide, which could repeat the effect of a March strike by?transport workers, which made getting around a hassle.

All told, travelers on Tuesday?and throughout the peak summer travel season?should be prepared to be flexible.

So if you're traveling abroad anytime soon, keep your eye on potential strikes and how they may affect your journey. These are some strategies to help you cope:

Tip 1: Know the word for 'strike' in the language of your destination
Search the Internet for news reports in the days before departure, looking for terms like "strike" and "airport" and "transport."

Keep in mind that the English-language media often ignores foreign strikes. So it helps to look in the foreign press, too. Years ago, before a trip to Italy, I searched news articles online using the Italian word for strike,?scoperto. Lo-and-behold, I found a story?which I translated using either?Yahoo Babel Fish?or?Google Translate?(I can't remember which)?learning that transport workers were going to be on strike the day my plane arrived at Milan Airport, making it impossible for me to use public transportation to get to my hotel in Lake Como. So I booked a cab from the airport in advance. The extra cost of the cab proved well worth the peace of mind. So look up foreign words for strike, too. (Case in point: Strike is "gr?ve" in French.)

Tip 2: Verify flight times prior to leaving for the airport
Labor actions may disrupt schedules, yet not all of these labor actions will be long strikes. Some will be more subtle, with greater delays and cancellations than usual, as airlines cope with disruptions prompted by workers seeking pay raises and more job security.

Tip 3: Don't assume trip insurance will offer blanket protection
The typical travel insurance policy offers coverage in the event of trip interruption or cancellation, but many policies exclude labor strikes along with acts of war. So talk to your insurer to confirm any details if things start looking bad for your particular travel dates.

Tip 4:?Fly early in the morning
A good option it lowers the odds of problems stacking up.

Tue, 01 May 2012 11:17:27 -0700 Hundreds flock to meet '50 Shades of Grey' author http://apirmepot.posterous.com/hundreds-flock-to-meet-50-shades-of-grey-auth http://apirmepot.posterous.com/hundreds-flock-to-meet-50-shades-of-grey-auth

MIAMI (AP) ? Young school teachers, middle-aged nurses and even the elderly flocked to a Miami book store Sunday for a chance to meet the author of the bestselling erotic romance "Fifty Shades of Grey" in the launch of her U.S. book tour.

British newcomer E L James drew more than 500 men and women at a morning book signing and spoke that evening to a boisterous, uninhibited crowd at the historic Biltmore Hotel. It was her second-ever book signing, yet the size of the crowd snaking through the store with mimosas and books in hand drew comparisons to the past response for writers such as Anne Rice and even politicians.

"This is a literary phenomenon," said Mitchell Kaplan, owner of Books & Books, the independent bookstore where James was signing copies. "E L struck a nerve, and her storytelling speaks to so many people."

In a few short months, James has snagged a seven-figure contract with Vintage Books, and Universal Pictures and Focus Films have purchased the rights to all three books in the trilogy about an unworldly college student who begins an unusual romantic relationship with a wealthy young businessman. The books have been called "mommy porn" for their sexual content and large, mostly female following, though men are signing up for autographs as well.

"I read it through lunch breaks and I'm giggling," said Laura Vargas, 31, an executive assistant at a large insurance company. "I'm like, 'I can't believe she just wrote that.'"

James began writing the books as fan fiction to Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series and quickly developed a cult-like following of her own. The romance between main characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey is surprising because of its unconventional nature: Grey asks Steele to sign a contract, and she agrees to be his "submissive" and to partake in a range of erotic activities. The stories were first published online, and as word of mouth spread, droves of people ? many of them not traditional readers of romantic or erotic fiction ? began downloading them on iPads and Kindles.

"I'm staggered by this," James said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I never set out to do this."

Until recently, the affable, laid-back author had been mostly preoccupied with her work as a television executive, taking care of her two teenage sons and doing mundane house chores. She was raised in London, studied history in college and dabbled once in a while with writing, but never spent a large amount of time on it until reading the "Twilight" books.

"I tried a couple of times, but never thought I could," James said of writing novels.

Even now, she's not sure she'll be able to write another.

"It's really quite daunting," she said.

A broad swath of mostly women, of all ages and backgrounds, showed up Sunday at the bookstore in Miami's upscale Coral Gables neighborhood. A young server went around with a tray of bright-colored drinks, and fans exchanged giddy stories about their experiences reading the books.

Emilia Diaz, a 57-year-old aesthetician, said it was a man who introduced her to the books. They had been talking online and over the phone for months and finally agreed to meet in person. On their first date, he suggested she read the books.

"Maybe he wants you to be his submissive," joked her cousin, Sandra Sousa-Druckman, an interior designer.

Diaz came in a group of four women, the eldest being Sousa-Druckman's 87-year-old mother, Cathy Perkins. Perkins, who was married for 60 years, said she usually reads Danielle Steele but wants to take up "Fifty Shades of Grey" and its two follow-up novels next. She had a copy of the second book, "Fifty Shades Darker," for James to autograph.

Stephanie Madison, 59, a bioterrorism coordinator at Jackson Hospital, said her boss had recommended the books to her. She then approached her daughter, Chantele Cogdell, about buying her a copy for Mother's Day.

Cogdell, who works in medical billing and coding, went online to find out what the book was about. Cogdell usually buys her mother flowers, purses or gift cards.

"I said, 'You really want this?'" Cogdell recalled.

"Yes!" her mother enthusiastically replied.

Anne Messitte, the publisher of Vintage Books, said the overwhelming response to James' second book signing, and the first in her tour, was unprecedented for a new writer.

"I think at the heart of it, these are wonderful, modern stories that engross the reader," she said.

James herself is at a loss to explain why the books have become so popular, so quickly. Fans who have written or spoken with her at events have had different reactions; some say their sex lives have improved, while others have said the book helped them in dealing with an adopted child. The fictional character Christian Grey was adopted at a young age.

Dressed casually in a jean jacket and with an arm full of silver bracelets, James sipped a glass of water at a quiet bar on the bottom floor of the Biltmore before her appearance. The hotel has hosted several presidents; President Barack Obama held a fundraiser there recently. It's also a popular choice for weddings, with a church just across the street.

Seven-hundred women ? many in designer dresses, high heels and skinny jeans ? filled a stately room with high, wooden ceilings at the hotel on Sunday. Many came in book clubs ? one said they call themselves the "Shady Ladies" ? and a handful of men showed up with their wives.

Jorge Forte, 39, a lobbyist, said he read "Fifty Shades of Grey" after his wife, a stay-at-home mom, became a fan. Now he's telling all his work colleagues about it.

"It was definitely not boring," Forte said with a smile.

The crowd burst into a standing applause and took out cell phones to take photos when James entered the room. They asked when there would be a follow-up and how long it had taken her to write. But mostly their questions boiled down to two topics: Who is Christian based off and how much of the stuff described in the book has she actually tried?

James said Christian was based on several people. As for whether she's had experiences like those in the book, she said: "Some yes, some no, some I just used my imagination."

"Fifty Shades of Grey" is slated to be translated into more than 30 languages, and James will be stopping in eight other cities along the East coast. When she goes out now, she's asked for photographs. Time Magazine recently named her one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World."

She's tried not to let too many things change in her life: She's still doing laundry, she says, and there are at least two people by her side who have not read the books ? her sons.

"Good God," she says. "I would be mortified."

Mon, 30 Apr 2012 23:41:44 -0700 Greek 'island of the blind'? More like 'island of welfare cheats' http://apirmepot.posterous.com/greek-island-of-the-blind-more-like-island-of http://apirmepot.posterous.com/greek-island-of-the-blind-more-like-island-of

On a Greek island, at least 600 are suspected of falsely claiming to be blind to get disability money. It's part of the rampant fraud that prompted Athens to halt payments to 200,000 last week.

It was known to the Venetians during the heyday of their trading empire as "The Flower of the Levant," but the Greek island of Zakynthos has now earned the mocking soubriquet "the island of the blind."

In the latest scandal to hit crisis-weary Greeks, the local government suspects that at least 600 people on the picturesque Ionian island managed to have themselves falsely registered as being blind, entitling them to generous monthly checks from the authorities in Athens.?

That represents 2 percent of the island?s population of 35,000 ? nearly 10 times the average rate of blindness in the rest of Europe, according to the?World Health Organization.?In reality there is nothing wrong with their sight at all.?"Blind" taxi drivers cheerfully ferry tourists around the holiday destination, recreational hunters with purported sight problems regularly take to the hills in pursuit of wild birds and rabbits, and "visually impaired" shopkeepers, taverna owners, and farmers with vineyards and olive groves go about their daily business.

?I?ve seen them playing cards in the bars and driving their cars ? it?s ridiculous!? says a local businessman, Spiros Skiadopoulos, who runs a photography college in Athens but maintains a home on the island.

The scandal of the fake blind people on Zakynthos is a sharp reminder of the immense challenges that will be faced by whoever takes the reins in national elections on May 6, vividly illustrating?the kind of corruption that has helped push Greece to the brink of economic and social meltdown.?

Fraudulent social welfare claims cost Greece 111 million euros ($146 million) last year, according to government statistics. And just last week, Labor ministry officials said they had halted welfare or pension payments to 200,000 people ? around 2 percent of Greece?s population ? because they were discovered to be based on fraudulent claims.

For their purported disability, the "blind" islanders received monthly payments of at least 350 euros ($462), sometimes much more depending on their age and family status. Those who supposedly needed caregivers received more money.

But with the newly elected mayor of the town of Zakynthos declaring an end to the payments ? part of a tough crackdown on such abuses on the island ??the defrauders' have been brought up short.?

Mayor Stelios Bozikis notified the authorities in Athens of the scam and an investigation has now been launched.?All the ?blind? people on the island will have to submit to independent tests by ophthalmologists in the capital.

Mon, 30 Apr 2012 22:52:28 -0700 Wary of Iran, Saudis seek progress on Gulf union http://apirmepot.posterous.com/wary-of-iran-saudis-seek-progress-on-gulf-uni http://apirmepot.posterous.com/wary-of-iran-saudis-seek-progress-on-gulf-uni

DUBAI (Reuters) - Wary of Iran and regional protest movements, Gulf Arab states are pushing ahead with plans for a political union that would involve joint foreign and defense policies, the Saudi foreign minister said in a speech at the weekend.

The comments by Prince Saud al-Faisal come two weeks ahead of a summit of U.S.-aligned Gulf leaders in Riyadh that will review an outline for such a union after Saudi King Abdullah first floated the idea last December.

A Gulf-based Western diplomat said the proposal was driven mainly by Saudi fears that the restive Shi'ite Muslim majority in Bahrain could topple the island kingdom's Sunni Muslim rulers. He said an announcement of progress on a federation between the two to launch the union could be made at the summit.

Shi'ite-led unrest is resurging in Bahrain a year after the ruling Al Khalifa family brought in Saudi and United Arab Emirates troops to help suppress an uprising seen by Gulf rulers as sectarian in nature and driven by Shi'ite giant Iran.

A visit this month by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the island of Abu Musa, also claimed by the United Arab Emirates as its own, has stoked the concern of conservative Gulf Arabs about Iranian influence in the oil-exporting region.

"Cooperation and coordination between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in its current format may not be enough to confront the existing and coming challenges, which require developing Gulf action into an acceptable federal format," Prince Saud said in a speech delivered on his behalf by his deputy to a GCC youth conference in Riyadh on Saturday.

"The Gulf union, when it is realized, God willing, will yield great benefits for its peoples, such as in foreign policy with the presence of a supreme Gulf committee coordinating foreign policy decisions that reorders group priorities and realizes group interests," he said.

Gulf leaders fear Bahrain will fall into the orbit of anti-Western, clergy-ruled Iran if the Shi'ite opposition wins a stake in government and the Al Khalifa family, distant relatives of Saudi Arabia's Al Saud, loses some of its extensive powers.

Bahraini security forces clash with Shi'ite protesters on most days in various areas of the country while opposition parties stage mass protests every week.

The opposition, led by the Shi'ite Islamist Wefaq party, denies Iran links, points to Sunnis and secularists in its ranks and says it only wants a say in how Bahrain is run.

GCC A RESPONSE TO REVOLUTIONARY IRAN

The GCC was formed in 1980 in the wake of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war, by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, a grouping including major world oil and gas producers.

But the Gulf elite - a club of Sunni autocrats providing military facilities to the United States - have watched with alarm as Iranian-allied Shi'ites rose to power in Iraq after a U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and Iran advanced a nuclear energy program they fear will give Tehran atomic bomb capability.

The Saudi royal, son of King Faisal who died in 1975, cited that program as well as the advent of Arab uprisings last year as challenges that required the GCC to rethink its relations.

He said that defense integration would be "an alternative to defense policies based on transitory alliances based on passing interests, since they are linked to changing interests".

Riyadh's faith in Washington took a hit when the United States exerted pressure to help push Hosni Mubarak from power in Egypt during an uprising last year. The arrival of Saudi troops in Bahrain signaled Riyadh's intention to prevent the Shi'ite-led protest movement threatening any of the Gulf monarchies.

The Gulf-based Western diplomat said a federal framework could allow Riyadh to permanently station troops in Bahrain.

Despite talk of union, however, rivalries among Gulf rulers run deep. The UAE has refused to join a planned monetary union and territorial disputes have held up many economic projects.

Saudi objections have delayed plans to build a causeway between Qatar and Bahrain, while Bahrain has been unable to buy natural gas from Qatar.

A government-allied parliamentarian in Bahrain told Reuters last week that he did not expect any such union declaration at the summit in Riyadh planned for May 14.

Bahraini opposition leaders have warned against any union, which is likely to provoke protests. Protesters described the Saudi intervention last year as an occupation.

But while anti-Saudi graffiti lines walls in Shi'ite districts, pro-government figures look to Saudi Arabia as a bulwark against Shi'ite empowerment and some have publicly called for union as salvation from Iran and Shi'ites.

Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising:

April 12: Google Inc. says its revenue, after subtracting ad commissions, totaled $8.14 billion in the first quarter. Analysts were expecting revenue of $8.09 billion on this basis. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. The so-called "cost-per-click" for these ads declined 12 percent from the same time a year earlier.

April 16: Gannett Co. reports a 25 percent drop in first-quarter net income, as advertising in its newspapers continued to decline. Broadcasting revenue rose, helped by advertising related to autos, the Super Bowl and political campaigns.

April 17: Yahoo Inc. says that after subtracting commissions paid to its advertising partners, revenue was $1.08 billion in the first quarter, up slightly from last year. It marked the first time since the third quarter of 2008 that Yahoo's quarterly net revenue has increased from the previous year.

Omnicom Group Inc., which owns marketing agencies, says its domestic revenue climbed 4 percent in the latest quarter, while international revenue increased nearly 6 percent.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. says it reduced losses in its online services division, which includes the ad-supported Bing search engine. The division's operating loss was $479 million, compared with $776 million a year ago. The division had $707 million in revenue, up 6 percent from $667 million.

The New York Times Co. says print and digital advertising revenue declined amid what CEO Arthur Sulzberger Jr. called "the uneven U.S. economic environment and uncertain global conditions." Advertising revenue fell 8 percent to $237.9 million, from $258.9 million a year ago.

April 25: The McClatchy Co. reports a slightly larger net loss due to declining advertising revenue. Meanwhile, compensation and other costs at the nation's third-largest newspaper company fell while digital advertising increased.

April 26: The Interpublic Group of Companies Inc., one of the world's largest advertising agency conglomerates, says revenue rose 2 percent to $1.51 billion, beating the $1.49 billion expected by analysts.

Time Warner Cable Inc. says advertising revenue grew 7 percent to $211 million in the quarter.

Online games company Zynga Inc. says revenue from advertising more than doubled to $28.2 million, from $13 million a year earlier.
